Ayiti: The Awakening is an award-winning documentary film by the Ayitian-born, Brooklyn-raised filmmaker and entrepreneur Sage Love. The film explores the aftermath of Haiti's devastating 2010 earthquake, the failed relief efforts, and the nation's troubled but inspiring history.
Summary of the Film
The documentary follows a young man, portrayed by director Sage Love, who questions the lack of substantial relief efforts after the 2010 earthquake. This journey drives him to seek out the stories of survivors, trace his own ancestral roots as a great-great grandson of Haiti's first ruler Jean-Jacques Dessalines, and unearth the rich, complex history of Ayiti (Haiti).
The film provides personal accounts behind the Haitian Revolution and challenges social norms by shedding light on authentic representations of the urban Black communities in Haiti.
