How to Replace Old Boat Carpet with Pettit Tuff Coat Non-Skid Coating
Is your boat carpet holding water, mold, and fishing hooks? Time for an upgrade! In this how-to, we walk you through the process of transforming your worn-out deck into a clean, modern, easy-to-maintain surface using Pettit Tuff Coat—the go-to rubberized non-skid coating trusted by boaters and pros alike.
🔧 Tools & Materials Needed:
Utility knife or carpet scraper
Belt sander or orbital sander
Vacuum or shop vac
Pettit Tuff Coat Primer (6950 or 4000/4001 based on substrate)
Pettit Tuff Coat Rubberized Non-Skid Coating
Textured Tuff Coat roller or texture sprayer
Painters tape
Clean rags and prep solvent
🪚 Step 1: Remove the Old Carpet
Start by ripping up the old carpet. Use a utility knife to cut sections if needed, and a scraper to pull up tough spots. Be prepared for a lot of glue and gunk left behind—this is normal.
💡 Tip: Remove all carpet remnants, glue, and staples for best adhesion later.
🧹 Step 2: Prep the Surface
Sand down the deck to remove any remaining adhesive and smooth the surface. Vacuum the area thoroughly and wipe it clean with acetone or marine surface cleaner to remove dust, grease, and debris.
⚠️ Prep is everything! A clean, dry, and sound surface is key to Tuff Coat’s long-lasting bond.
🖌️ Step 3: Prime the Surface
Apply the Pettit Tuff Coat Primer (choose the one appropriate for your surface—fiberglass, wood, or metal). This helps ensure a strong bond between your surface and the rubberized coating.
Allow primer to dry completely per label instructions.
🎨 Step 4: Apply Pettit Tuff Coat
Mix the Tuff Coat thoroughly—this is a heavy-textured coating, so power mixing helps. Use the Tuff Coat textured roller or texture spray gun to apply an even coat across the entire surface.
✅ It’s non-skid, UV-stable, and soft underfoot
✅ It resists mold, dirt, and won’t snag your hooks
✅ Cleans up with soap and water—no harsh solvents needed
Apply 2 coats for best results, allowing proper drying time between coats.
🕓 Step 5: Let It Dry & Enjoy the Upgrade
Let your Tuff Coat cure fully before heavy use—typically 24–72 hours depending on temperature and humidity. Once cured, you’ve got a durable, safe, and stylish new deck.
Why Choose Pettit Tuff Coat?
No more moldy carpet
No more dirty feet or fishy smells
No more hook tangles
Looks incredible, performs even better
