Core Grammar: Expressing a Period of Time
We demystify the patterns to tell people exactly how long something has been happening.
Pattern A: Verb + 了 + Time Period + Object
Use this to state a completed action that lasted for a specific time.
Example: 我学了一年中文。 (I studied Chinese for one year.)
Pattern B: Verb + 了 + Time Period + Object + 了
This crucial pattern adds a final 了 to indicate the action started in the past and is still continuing up to the present moment.
Example: 我学了一年中文了。 (I have been studying Chinese for one year [and still am].)
Example (from title): 我认识她五年了。 (I have known her for five years.)
