Between the 1930s and 1950s, the Canadian government forcibly relocated Inuit families to the High Arctic. Firstly in the 1930s, from Baffin Island settlements of Cape Dorset, Pangnirtung and Pond Inlet to Dundas Harbour on Devon Island, following Arctic Bay, Fort Ross and in the end Taloyoak.
They told them they were going to places where there's plenty of game to hunt, fish and trap and they are going to live like their ancestors before. But the reality was brutal, Canadian authorities relocated Inuit people to the High Arctic because they wanted to establish sovereignty, as other countries like the Soviet Union, United States, Denmark and Norway made claims to this uninhabited region.
The second time they did this was in the 1950s. The Canadian goverment again relocated Inuit from Pond Inlet and Inukjuak to Resolute Bay and Craig Harbour/Grise Fiord. Families were torn from their homes, dropped in unfamiliar frozen lands, and left to survive with little support. Many endured starvation, extreme cold, and isolation.
This video uncovers the dark history of Canada’s High Arctic Relocations and the lasting impact on Inuit communities.
