A video comparing glossy and matte displays on the 17" and 15" MacBook Pro.
.
. Personally I would choose the matte option, but I could understand why someone would choose the glossy option instead.
.
. If you are buying a laptop, you probably want to take it with you to most places, and outdoors, the matte display performs better. True, the glossy is better in low light conditions and people might ask: why pay more for less rich colors? Well if you always had a dark enclosure around the macbook pro then you are probably in a room most of your time and in this case it does not need to be highly portable. Why not choose the imac if you are going to keep your computer in a dark environment all the time? After all, the imac is cheaper and has a bigger screen with more resolution. If all you do is carry your macbook pro from one dark room to another, ignore my comment about the imac. However, working in a dark environment for long periods of time is occasionally not good for your eyes.
.
. One could also argue that while the glossy display does produce deeper blacks, unless you are surrounded by darkness (sounds evil I know), you will not enjoy those deeper blacks. The darker the display on the glossy gets, the more reflections there are, and if the color it is portraying is black, it is highly likely that there will be reflections. At 0:43 you can see that there are reflections on the glossy screen and for me at least, that would ruin the whole experience of watching a movie. Do not forget that in those conditions there is no direct light on the screen and you can still see glare. Moreover, you can plug the matte display into a large glossy screen when you are indoors and only require the matte display for outdoor use. With the glossy option, you could connect to a matte display indoors but that would defeat the whole purpose. Ideally one would want a glossy display indoors and a matte display outdoors.
.
. Furthermore, the richer colors on the glossy are not always needed or noticeable. For example if you are working on a word processing program such as Pages '09 then the glossy display would not yield any benefit. In fact, as one can see from 1:32, the matte displays better whites and this would be preferable in such circumstances.
.
. Also one should note that if they did spend a large sum of cash on a laptop, they probably would want to show it off to friends. Even if that is not the case, I for one would be rather annoyed that I cannot use it outdoors. Perhaps in the backyard, or a public park. In fact ask yourselves how you would feel if you spent well over $1500 on a laptop but can't use it wherever you want simply because you did not pay $50 more.
Thank you for your opinions and kind comments
