Driving down highway 154 in Gibsland, Louisiana on May 23, 1934, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow came upon the father of a friend, who appeared to have broken down on the side of the road. As their car slowed, the trap was revealed: authorities opened fire, unleashing over 150 bullets into the car and killing the couple in seconds.
News of the deaths traveled quickly, and a crowd gathered at the scene. Many curious onlookers stole souvenirs such as pieces of clothing and hair; one person even tried to take Bonnie's wedding ring.
Though the two funerals were held on separate days and in different funeral homes across town from one another, each was attended by thousands of people.
Little more than a local curiosity just a year before, photos of the outlaw couple had been discovered at a hideout in 1933, cementing their criminal exploits and illicit romance in the American imagination for nearly a century after their deaths.
