The Kola Superdeep Borehole, the deepest hole ever drilled by humans, went only 12 kilometers into the Earth. That’s less than 1% of the distance to the center. So how did we figure out what’s inside the Earth if we’ve never been there? Scientists studied earthquakes and the waves they create. These waves move through the Earth and change speed or direction depending on what material they pass through. This helped us learn that the Earth is made of four layers. The crust is the outer layer where we live. Below that is the mantle, a thick layer of hot, slowly moving rock. Deeper is the outer core, made of liquid metal, and at the very center is the inner core, a solid ball of iron and nickel. Clues also came from volcanic eruptions, which bring material from deep underground, and even from meteorites, which are made of the same stuff as the Earth. So, what do you think lies even deeper—could there be something we’ve missed?
