(This is an update in September 2020, the guitar paint looked very good for a couple of years, but it now has lots of fine hairline cracks all over which I assume is caused by the wood expanding and contracting and the paint not being flexible enough to handle that.
I can see the white colour of the primer in the cracks so it seems to be the black and clear lacquer that is cracked.
As mentioned below this is the only guitar I've ever painted so I'm definitely not an expert and this is not a tutorial.
If you want to paint your guitar get advice from someone with lots of experience).
The painting took 3 weeks. The video 16 weeks with 1544 cuts, 3000 words from 32 hrs of footage. There is no talking, only captions. (I did this so that the captions can be translated into different languages, but I don't know how well youtube's automatic translation system works).
As the title says, this is a record of how and why I painted my guitar and, as it's the only guitar I've painted, I'm not the best person to ask for advice and it's definitely not a tutorial.
Also, as there's a very good chance I won't paint a guitar again, I'm not interested in any advice on what I should have done or what you would have done differently.
The guitar painting was one project and the video making was another project, they are both now finished (thankfully).
This video was partly influenced by youtube channels I subscribe to who make involved, detailed, informative videos that are sometimes half an hour, or an hour, or longer eg. Jafromobile ( / @jafromobile ) and Bad obsession Motorsport. ( / @badobsessionmotorsport )
I enjoy watching videos like that so I had no intention of making this a five minute summary.
It has ended up being the length it needed to be with everything included that I personally thought was important.
Another reason I don't want to make a quick summary of this is because it would be a spoiler to see how the guitar looks when finished.
It's intended to be watched from start to finish following the progression of the work.
There's a fair amount of speeded up headcam footage, so some parts are like Hardcore Henry painting a guitar, but I've kept each speeded up part to a maximum of about 30 seconds.
There's a lot more detailed info about the making of the video on the "Music videos" page on my website, but the captions in the video contain all of the info about the guitar painting process.
I've also added a section about my own musicians dystonia problems and solution on my "Music history" page on my website.
All of the music is my own composition/playing/recording and I own copyright for all of the songs.
