The Tamil Nadu government has informed the Supreme Court that there is nothing illegal about missionaries spreading Christianity as long as they do not employ unlawful means to do so. The government emphasized that the Constitution of India guarantees people the right to "spread their religion peacefully" and "change their beliefs", and that anti-conversion laws are susceptible to misuse against minorities. The DMK-led government further submitted that citizens should be allowed to freely choose their religion, and it would not be appropriate for the government to hinder their personal beliefs and privacy.
