This is a test which is conducted to measure the levels of prolactin in the blood. Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland which is situated at the base of the brain. Prolactin is usually present in small amounts in males and non-pregnant females and in large amounts in pregnant females. The basic function of prolactin is to stimulate the production of milk after childbirth. It is also known as the milk-producing hormone.
