Here is a quick timeline of the PT degree since the 90s:
The switch from a master's degree to a doctorate for physical therapy was completed when the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) made the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) the required degree for all accredited entry-level physical therapist education programs as of January 1, 2016.
1996: The first DPT students graduated from Creighton University, the first university to offer an entry-level DPT program.
1990s: The requirement for physical therapists shifted to a master's degree.
2000: The APTA set a goal that physical therapy would be provided by doctors of physical therapy by 2020, and began a phased plan to transition to a doctoral-level entry-level degree.
2016: As of January 1, the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) made the DPT the required degree for all of its accredited entry-level programs.
