STORYLINE:
Fifteen new rows of graves have been added to Kharkiv’s main cemetery in the last year since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Dozens of flags flutter in the wind, each representing a fallen Ukrainian servicemen laid to rest.

Andrii Zatsorenko, 41, laid red carnations on the grave of his friend, Dmytro Kovalenko who was buried earlier in the day.

Kovalenko died in the salt-mining town of Bakhmut on February 20, the longest battle of the war.

Zatsorenko stood and said his final goodbyes, the cold wind striking his face.

He had a business selling diesel products but on the third day of the war Russian missiles destroyed his warehouse.

He sent his family to Poland where they live as refugees.

In the tumult of war, he lost touch with his friend Kovalenko.

Kovalenko’s wife called him to say he had been killed.

"It is hard to explain how I feel. A nightmare is happening in the truest sense of the word," he said.
