Do you think you suck at singing? Let’s look at why you may think this and what you can do so you don’t suck anymore!
I'm Roger Burnley, and I’ve been a vocal coach for more than 30 years in Hollywood. In this time I’ve developed different techniques, processes, and things to use to get the voice in a really great place.
Singing is a learned skill. While using one's voice to speak and sing are both natural, they require more accuracy and technique to produce quality sound.
Speaking range is usually limited, but singing range requires tuning of many more frequencies and handling breaks in the voice where the resonance moves in the body. Adjusting to make the sound smooth and evenly dynamic is a challenge.
Some people grow up mimicking great vocalists correctly. Some people grow up mimicking great vocalists with incorrect technique, sometimes that a young voice can compensate for, but that will appear as a vocal problem as the personages.
Some people grow up mimicking singers who aren't so great, and speakers around them and don't develop the technique and good vocal habits that are needed.
They may pick up poor vocal habits that take time to unlearn, i.e. using too much throaty rasp, the vocal fry, or else speaking in too-breathy a way, or letting all the sound go through their nose, or shouting and straining and pushing, instead of learning to project the voice in a healthy way.
A problem that you might have if you don’t think you sound so great is pitch. Are you singing in tune? Are you singing the right note? Are they on key? Are you following the melody?
These are all variations asking the same thing. This is the fundamental baseline for a singer. They could have the best voice in the world but if they're off-key' they will sound sucky.
The next thing you need to sound great is tone. Does the singer have a great tone to their voice?
To be clear, this varies from style to style and song to song. A country song will have a different sound - or tone - to their voice than an opera one. And rightly so. There is no right and wrong with tone but rather what is best for the song. Having said that, some singers just have a great sound to their voice and seems they could sing anything with their sound and it would be amazing.
Another important piece to the puzzle is breathing. An uncontrolled breath can cause a raft of problems. Everything from pitching problems to projection to simply being able to sing a line without running out of air or singing a set without getting tired. Allowing the breath to respond to the vocal folds in a controlled and natural way is essential to having a great voice. Most folks have poor air control when singing.
Work on these things and you will begin to suck less and less. And at a certain point you will realise you don’t suck at all. In fact, you’ll realise you sound great!
