Recently, discussions around Europe’s long-standing energy dependence on Russia have heated up in parallel with Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Europe imports around one-third of its natural gas and more than one-quarter of its oil from Russia. In turn, European countries are Russia’s main energy customer, which derives up to 45 per cent of its federal revenue from fossil fuel exports. The current situation levels up the complexity of this interdependence and the potential for a total cut-off of energy supplies from Russia to Europe cannot be discounted. This would not only have significant impacts on European energy supplies at a time where Europe is suffering the consequences of soaring energy prices and decreasing storage levels, but it would also raise all sorts of questions about the future of European energy security.
In this session, European energy security will be discussed in the context of Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
