This is a short film presenting the process behind A Letter from Long Tan.
A letter from Long Tan is a nine-minute film re-enacting the historic battle of Long Tan will be screened at regular intervals in the Vietnam War section of the Australian War Memorial's new suite of galleries, Conflicts 1945 to today.
The film was commissioned by the Memorial specifically to screen in the new gallery. The battle scenes were shot on a plantation near Mackay in Queensland in July 2007 and feature Australian Army personnel as well as professional actors and local extras.
The production is a historically accurate re-enactment of the battle of Long Tan, rather than a dramatisation. Preparations for the shoot involved a high level of detail, with Memorial staff focusing on authenticity of uniforms, weapons, vehicles, and all other aspects of the battle.
Long Tan veterans were consulted to ensure the various elements were captured as accurately as possible.
