Three Phase Electrical Wiring Installation in Home - NEC & IECTo perform 3-phase DB (distribution board) wiring, you need to connect the main power supply's three phases (e.g., brown, black, grey), neutral (blue), and earth (green/yellow) to the incoming terminals of a main breaker (like an MCCB) and then feed each outgoing sub-circuit's breaker (MCB/RCBO) from these phases. Each sub-circuit then connects to its respective phase(s), neutral, and earth using appropriate cables and terminal bars.
1. Safety First
Turn off the power: Before starting any work, ensure the main power supply is completely shut off to the distribution board to prevent electric shock.
2. Understand the Components
Distribution Board (DB): This is the central panel that distributes power to smaller circuits.
Main Breaker (e.g., MCCB): A single large circuit breaker that controls the entire incoming power supply to the DB.
Sub-Circuit Breakers (MCBs/RCBOs): Smaller circuit breakers for individual circuits, like lights or sockets.
Terminal Bars: Metal bars for connecting multiple neutral and earth wires from various circuits.
Cables: Power cables for live (phase), neutral, and protective earth connections.
3. Wiring Steps
Incoming Power:
Connect the three incoming live (phase) cables (e.g., brown, black, grey) to the input side of the main breaker. Connect the incoming neutral (blue) and earth (green/yellow) wires to their respective terminals or busbars.
Outgoing Connections:
Connect the output of the main breaker's phases to the input side of the individual sub-circuit breakers (MCBs or RCBOs) installed on the DIN rail within the DB.
For each sub-circuit, run its live cable to its breaker.
Run the neutral cable from that sub-circuit to a neutral terminal bar.
Run the earth cable from that sub-circuit to the main earth bar.
Cable Dressing:
Neatly arrange and tie the cables together, grouping them by color (e.g., all browns, all blacks/greys, all blues).
Use the appropriate methods to route cables down the back of the spine or around the components without pinching them tightly.
4. Final Checks
Verify connections: Double-check all connections for tightness and correct phasing.
Check cable colors: Ensure you are using the correct, standardized color codes for each conductor type.
Test the system: Once all wiring is complete, you can carefully turn on the main power and test each circuit to ensure it functions correctly and safely. Check Out Our Other Channels :
