When dealing with IRS issues, you might notice ads promoting tax firms staffed by CPAs, tax attorneys, and former IRS agents. It sounds impressive, especially with former agents on staff—but does that really make a difference?
Working for a major tax company over a decade ago, I saw how much experience matters. The seasoned CPAs and enrolled agents were truly exceptional. However, newly licensed attorneys sometimes faced challenges. Many hadn't specialized in tax law during law school, and the bar exam in the U.S. generally doesn’t cover tax topics, leaving them with a steep learning curve.
Even former IRS agents come with limitations. The IRS is a vast organization divided into specialized departments: collections, audits, appeals, processing, self-employed income, field collections, and more. Many former agents only have expertise within their assigned department. For example, an ex-audit agent might know audits inside-out but have minimal experience with collections or appeals.
