Reflection Rag (1917) - Scott Joplin (With Score / Sheet Music)

If these simple numbers alone do not reflect the admirable ambition of what was once your average traveling musician, then I am not sure I'd be able to convince you any further!

From troubadour to instructor for hire, all the way to the status of "King" and back down to the cups, Scott Joplin lived quite an eventful life during his time-- both at and away from the piano. Rather he himself realized or not, his contributions to Ragtime & for black composers alone helped pave a crucial pathway to innovative success that many after him would soon follow. That is even as his image had nearly faded it away from major public interest for good.

Upon admittance to Manhattan State Hospital in 1917 for his ongoing complications from syphilis amongst other issues, Joplin would face his final defeat on April 1st, dying penniless and soon to be forgotten. Not to long after his death, John Stark (Joplin's former champion publisher) had introduced one final Joplin rag to the world from his archives: "Refection Rag - Syncopated Musings." As inferred from the peculiar title, perhaps chosen by Stark himself, the work had been published by the age old firm in remembrance of Joplin & the legacy he had left behind- unless this is all to be a matter of coincidence or oversight.

Whatever the true reason may be, it is interesting to note speculations of the rag being merely assembled rather than an actual completed tune. This comes into question with their being five repeated sections featuring no reiterations in set order, a trait not seen within Joplin's work or that of Stark's other champion composers. Given apparent urgency to honor the composer in some form before the year had been over, this may have led this "assemblage" altogether.
