This is the third in a series of talks about the origins and usage of money in the ancient world. In it I tackle the question of exchange and the myth of the 'barter economy.'
Writing about economy goes at least as far back as Aristotle in the 4th century BCE. He was Plato's student and he went on to teach Alexander the Great. He was a philosopher, and economics was still taught in moral philosophy programs through much of the 19th century CE.
Aristotle's ideas about economy and economics made their way into the writings of Adam Smith, Karl Marx and other influential thinkers much later in time. These included the idea of 'primitive barter,' which is still discussed in economic texts today, but which is largely inaccurate.
I earned my Ph.D. in 2001 and have been studying money in the ancient world for most of my career. I compiled much of the information in this series of lectures for a class I taught for many years at the University of Pennsylvania, entitled The Meaning of Money.
