Rab athletes Nate Smith and Sarah Morris headed to Denali for what proved to be a challenging mission.
"The weather challenged most other teams and us this season. Extreme cold, high winds and snow measured in feet instead of inches have shut a lot of summit bids down via all routes this year so far.
We quickly realized after landing on the glacier that the Cassin Ridge had too much objective hazard for our comfort. We decided to make a light and fast style single push for the summit via the standard West Buttress route.
We arrived at the 14,200 ft camp after a few days on the mountain hoping to thread the needle on a 1 day forecasted weather window that never came. We retreated to our basecamp lower on the mountain, regrouped and waited for the next window. It too never came and instead we got 4 feet of snow in less than 24 hours.
Mountain expeditions sometimes don’t work out as planned. We’re grateful for these wild experiences even if they don’t involve a summit."
