We are back to plot advancement:
-Hester brings some embroidered gloves to Governor Billingham. She has another reason why she wants to see him: some people in town are saying that Hester is not fit to care for Pearl and that Pearl would be better off being raised by a "good Puritan family". The Governor is one of the main proponents of this idea. Hester wants to nip this in the bud.
-While walking to the Governor's house, towns children yell and throw mud and Pearl and Hester. Pearl chases after them and scares them all away.
-Pearl is dressed in a very flamboyant red velvet outfit that has gold embroidery just like the scarlet letter. Hester made her this dress 'on purpose'.
-When they get to the Governor's home, a servant answers the door and Hawthorne makes his attitude clear by saying that they servant had been a free man in England but is a slave here.
-The servant tells Hester she cannot see the Governor because ministers are visiting him along with a leech (think-Dimmesdale and Chillingworth).
-Hester lets herself in anyway.
-Notice the description of the house, inside and outside. It is showy and very English, not at all "Puritan".
-The Governor even brought over his old armor from England and it is so shiny that Pearl can see reflections in it.
-The garden outside, though, is lacking...very dry ground, a few rose bushes, but otherwise a lot of cabbage, pumpkin vines, and small bushes that are barely growing.
-Pearl has a temper tantrum over wanting a red rose from the garden but she immediately goes silent when the Governor and his guests enter the room.
