Описание: How Hard Is Your Hardwood Floor? The Janka Scale Explained

One of the questions we hear often at Capell Flooring and Interiors is:

“How hard is my hardwood floor?”

Or…

“Will this hardwood scratch?”

The answer starts with something called the Janka Scale.

The Janka Scale is the common test used to measure how hard a wood species is. In simple terms, it measures how much force it takes to press a steel ball into a sample of wood. The higher the number, the harder and more dent-resistant the wood generally is.

But here is the important part:

Harder does not mean scratch-proof.

Hardwood flooring is beautiful, warm, natural, and timeless — but every hardwood floor can scratch, dent, or show wear depending on how it is used and maintained.

We often compare it to stainless steel. Stainless steel is very strong, but it still scratches. Hardwood works the same way. Some woods are harder than others, but no hardwood floor is bulletproof.

Common Hardwood Janka Ratings

Here are a few common hardwood flooring species:

• Hickory: 1820
• Maple: 1450
• White Oak: 1360
• Red Oak: 1290
• Walnut: 1010
• American Cherry: 950

Hickory is harder and often does a nice job hiding everyday marks because of its natural color variation. Walnut is softer, but it is still a beautiful hardwood. Because walnut is often darker and smoother in appearance, scratches may show more than they would on a rustic hickory or character-grade oak floor.

That does not make one “good” and the other “bad.” It just means the right floor depends on your home, lifestyle, pets, kids, sunlight, furniture, maintenance habits, and expectations.

What the Janka Scale Can Tell You

The Janka Scale can help you compare hardwood species for dent resistance.

It can help explain why one wood may perform differently than another.

But it cannot promise your hardwood floor will never scratch.

When choosing hardwood flooring, you should also consider:

• Wood species
• Finish type
• Color variation
• Texture
• Gloss level
• Pets and children
• Area rugs and furniture pads
• Long-term maintenance

The best hardwood floor is not always the hardest floor. The best hardwood floor is the one that fits how you actually live.

P.S. The Janka Scale is useful, but it is not the whole story. Before choosing hardwood flooring, make sure you compare hardness, color, finish, texture, lifestyle, and long-term expectations. That is exactly what we help you sort through at Capell Flooring and Interiors.
