Community orientation is a course about Swedish society for those who have recently moved to Sweden. The course gives you important information for a good start in Malmö.

You can sign up for community orientation throughout the year. There is no registration deadline.

About social orientation

In the social orientation course, you gain knowledge about your rights and obligations, about Swedish democracy and how Swedish society is organized.

The course is about practical everyday life, for example questions about work and education, housing, health and medical care and children and family. The course is in your mother tongue or another language that you know. You can listen, ask and discuss. The course is free!

The training is individually adapted to your needs and conditions. You can combine your studies with work, activities, efforts and other studies, for example sfi.

Who can read social studies?

Community orientation is for you who are between 18 and 66 years old and who have recently received a residence permit in Sweden.

The training is divided into four sub-courses

The community orientation is at least 100 hours and usually consists of four parts. The course can be read at Komvux Kungsgatan 44 or digitally via Teams (with some compulsory lessons at the school. There are courses in the morning and in the afternoon as well as in the evenings.

You can also be offered extended social orientation with several themes such as study visits, parent training, conversation circles, etc.

Part course 1

Contains, among other things, information about being new to Malmö, everyday finances, housing, fire and traffic, work and studies and the school system (30 hours).

Part course 2

Contains, among other things, information about being new to Sweden, migration and health, how Sweden is governed and the rule of law, democracy and participation, nature and the environment, allergies and self-care, diet and exercise and study visits (24 hours).

Part course 3

Contains, among other things, information on free time, culture and association life as well as study visits, tobacco and alcohol, digitalisation, study guidance, STI and HIV, SRHR (24 hours).

Part course 4

Contains, among other things, information about the individual's rights and obligations, children's rights, help and support, starting a family and living with children in Sweden, aging in Sweden and about labor market knowledge (24 hours).

After the education

After training, you will receive a certificate sent home if you have had an attendance of at least 85%.
