Vikings discovered North America around 1000 AD, approximately 500 years before Columbus, by sailing west from their established Greenland settlements. Led by Leif Erikson, they explored areas they named Helluland, Markland, and Vinland (modern-day Newfoundland), where they established a short-lived settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows.
Accidental Sighting: The initial sighting is credited to Bjarni Herjólfsson, whose Greenland-bound ship was blown off course around 985 AD, leading him to spot an unknown, forested land to the west.
Leif Erikson's Expedition: Inspired by Bjarni's account, Leif Erikson, son of Erik the Red, purchased the same ship and led a deliberate expedition around 1000 AD to explore these new lands.
Landings: The Vikings named the areas they found based on their geography:
Helluland ("Land of Flat Rocks"): Likely Baffin Island.
Markland ("Land of Forests"): Likely Labrador.
Vinland ("Land of Wine/Meadows"): Likely Newfoundland, where they found grapes, vines, and timber.
Settlement: Archaeological evidence confirms a Norse settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, which was used as a base for further exploration.
Departure: The settlement was abandoned after a few years, likely due to conflicts with Indigenous populations (referred to as skrælings in the sagas) and the logistical difficulty of maintaining a colony so far from Greenland.
