Best known from The Dick Van Dyke Show as Sally Rogers, for nearly 90 years "Miss Rose Marie's" husky-voice, good looks, and comedic timing entertained millions. On this episode of The Jim Masters Show Live entertainment, lifestyle, celebrity talk show series, award-winning television, radio, multimedia personality, host, journalist and entertainer Jim Masters welcomes Rose Marie's daughter Georgiana “Noopy” Guy Rodrigues to the show as his special guest as we remember and celebrate the iconic actress on the occassion of her 100th birthday.
She started her career at the age of 3 and soon had her own radio show, was making records, and starring in several of the earliest talking films beginning with the 1929 short, "Baby Rose Marie the Child Wonder." She worked with all the greats of vaudeville, theatre, radio, television and film. She had a brief Broadway run in "Top Banana," made numerous guest appearances on all the hottest shows of the day, starred in several television series, including "The Doris Day Show," and "The Dick Van Dyke Show," which made her a household name. She spent years as the top center square on "Hollywood Squares" and is the only original member to have been part of all of its reincarnations. As part of a singing and comedy act called "4 Girls 4," she toured extensively with Rosemary Clooney, Helen O'Connell and Margaret Whiting, breaking house records all over the world. In 2002 she penned her best-selling memoirs "Hold The Roses," and just months before she passed away at the age of 94 on December 28, 2017, her documentary, "Wait For You Laugh" was released to critical acclaim.
In recognition of her amazing career and her contribution to the world of comedy her archives, including her trademark bow, costumes, scripts, awards, correspondence, photos, home movies and scrapbooks are housed at the National Comedy Center with the likes of George Carlin, Shelley Berman and Lucille Ball. As a testament to her standing in the world of entertainment, the Smithsonian's Museum of American Historyhas enshrined numerous items from her lifetime of performing.
August 15 of 2023 marks Mother's centennial. In honor of her 100th, a CD of Mother's music has been produced. The CD, "Rose Marie Sings" is in response to her faithful fans' requests to hear more of her singing. Her birthday will be celebrated on her social media with 100 daily posts of "Rose Marie Facts." I hope you'll join us in marking this anniversary of her birth.
The estate of Rose Marie is launching a centennial celebration honoring the star of stage, screen, radio and television whose career spanned 90 years from Baby Rose Marie in vaudeville, to Sally Rogers on The Dick Van Dyke Show, to the top center square in The Hollywood Squares and the subject of the acclaimed documentary “Wait For Your Laugh.”
The celebration begins with the August 11, 2023 release of ROSE MARIE SINGS: THE COMPLETE MERCURY RECORDINGS & MORE from Sepia Records in association with the Rose Marie estate. Among the 29 classic recordings and rarities are favorite showtunes, standards and novelty songs – all available on compact disc for the first time. Some may only know Rose Marie as the comedienne from “The Dick Van Dyke Show” who occasionally sang, and not realize that she started in the business as a singer with her own radio show at the age of three. For decades prior to her television stardom she was primarily known as a singer opening Las Vegas, headlining the top nightclubs, and performing with the country’s best musicians.
Rose Marie’s daughter, Georgiana “Noopy” Guy Rodrigues, elaborates: “Just in time to celebrate her centennial year, we’re so happy to finally have a compilation of my mother’s music which her fans have been requesting for years.” In addition to her Mercury recordings dating to the 1940s and 1950s, there are many exciting and previously unreleased songs from her personal archives from her early career on radio and into the 1960s after she became a big television star. Mother accomplished so much in her long, amazing career in show business from childhood into her 90s. She loved her fans and would be thrilled to know that we’re still being responsive to them and continuing the conversations she started when she was three,” exclaims Rodrigues.
