We finally arrive at the Mediterranean coast and a hotel that gave a view over the town of Banjuls sur Mer. Out of season the town is very quiet and we were disappointed to find so many restaurants closed at night. The weather was a bit gloomy but a three night stay did give us time to relax and recharge after many days on the road. This area, which today is close to the border with Spain has in the past been independent of both. It has much in common with Catalonia which often looks to more independence from Spain. When the sun shines the sea takes on a blue, green hue that has led to the area being labelled the Vermillion Coast/Cote Vermeille. We take the opportunity to visit nearby Collioure but the heavy clouds and atmosphere was not helpful to photography of what is, on a blue sky day, a very photogenic location. The iconic church tower was covered in scaffolding which added to the sense of disappointment. This was as far south as we travelled on this trip. As we left ahead of us we had more of the heart of France ahead before we arrived at the Atlantic coast.
