Slinging Whistling Projectiles: Part Two

Описание: I think I have seen just how deep this rabbit hole goes, and I'm not sure I care to go much farther. You could spend a LOT of time figuring out which dimensions of holes sound the best on various things like golf balls. I don't understand much of the physics behind the various sounds.

My current recommendation for making golf balls whistle from a hand-sling would be a single 1/4" diameter hole drilled 1" deep because I like that sound. If you wanted it to be louder you could then add several more holes to the same ball. Any more than 10 holes is overkill. It would be easiest to drill these additional holes 1/2" deep to avoid intersecting the 1" main hole (1/2" also makes a decent sound). I have yet to come up with any clever scheme that would allow drilling more than, say, 3 holes in the same ball, each deeper than the radius of the ball, without having them break into each other. But if you could figure out a way to do that, a ball with 6 of the 1/4" x 1" holes might be an incredible menace.

I clocked one of my throws at 85 fps and would guess that I can break 100 fps with my hand-sling. But if you are shooting golf balls at faster speeds you could edge towards smaller diameter holes like 3/16". For a twittering sound stick with shallow holes like 1/4" deep (similar to the holes on ancient projectile finds). For more sustained sounds drill deeper. Any diameter larger than 1/4" seems unnecessary. Drilling out the other side is also unnecessary but does make a good sound.

I haven't tried adding any washers to the golf balls, but I did sort of try adding washers to the tennis balls and it wasn't a miracle making addition. I am giving up on making tennis balls whistle anything close to what the golf balls do (one of them warbles a bit). Besides, drilling holes in tennis balls gives them even more air resistance than they already have.

It would be interesting to see the difference in maximum distance between whistling golf balls with holes and plain ones without holes.
