The 2022 Huawei MateBook X Pro is a beautiful laptop with the performance to match, but is it worth the £1700 price tag?
In the box, you get the new Ink Blue MateBook X Pro with the skin-soothing metallic finish that's soft and reduces fingerprints when handling it with sweaty hands. It's a 14.2 laptop that weighs 1.26kg but is a little heavier if you opt for the silver model. You get a USB A dongle for connecting legacy peripherals, a quick start guide and a 90W fast charger with a long USB C cable to recharge that 60 Wh battery inside.
Closer look at the MateBook X Pro's design; it's sleek, and minimalist, has a thin profile and has slim bezels with a 92.5% screen-to-body ratio. On the lid, you get the Huawei logo, and on the right side, you have 2 USB-C ports which support data, charging and DisplayPort. On the left side, you have 2 Thunderbolt 4 ports which also support data, charging and DisplayPort, but here you can connect two 4K displays or one 8K display for more productivity. For those that don't want to use Bluetooth headphones, you have a 3.5 mm headset and microphone 2-in-1 jack.
Open up the lid which can be opened with a finger without lifting the whole thing, you have two visible speaker grills on either side that house the speakers. We get 6 speakers and 4 microphones, two of which are just by the bottom lip for better audio. The speakers sound punchy although not as good as the 16-inch MacBook Pro.
On top of its 14.2-inch 3.1K FullView display, you have a 720P HD camera which from last time wasn't that good although you do get some AI features like follow me and eye contact and it also supports Windows Hello for login.
Look below the display, we have a nicely laid out keyboard with touch-typing in mind. It has 1.5mm key travel and feels really nice to type on, it's one of my favourites to type on. We no longer have the signature recessed webcam that looked up your chin and we still have a fingerprint sensor for quickly getting back on your laptop.
Let's not forget the large and very precise trackpad which also offers some great gestures so you can quickly get things done. You can swipe on the edges for example, with the right side for volume control and the left side for brightness level control. This display is also certified to help reduce eye strain.
The display itself is very bright and vibrant and although it's not OLED, it still delivers some great colours with P3 and sRGB colour gamuts. I really can't fault it. It has up to 90Hz refresh which shows how smooth it is for web browsing and even gaming. I also like its 3:2 aspect ratio, it works well for browsing.
For performance, it met my expectation even though the benchmark result which puts it below an office laptop wasn't something to be proud of. It is Intel Evo certified, Equipped with a 12th Gen Intel Core i7-1260P Processor, and 16 GB LPDDR5 with 1 TB NVMe PCIe SSD. All that with Windows 11 and a Thermal Design Power of 30W in Performance Mode, the MateBook X Pro performs really well. It's fully capable of editing your 4K videos in Adobe Premier and when I put it through 3D Mark, the results were satisfactory too.
With the Intel Iris Xe Graphics, You can comfortably play Apex Legends with no issues, in fact, most games will run smoothly at decent frame rates when running in 1080. Huawei also added Super Turbo technology that shows takes into account, the status of the CPU, GPU, memory, hard disk and battery to deliver the required processing power needed for any task you throw at it. One thing tho, with all that power, it does get hot under heavy workload and the battery life is not the best at around 6.5 hours, but this will depend on your usage of course.
Even with the new dual Shark Fin fan cooling system, and the ultra-slim VC heat dissipation modules, it still gets up to 40 degrees and more when plugged in. Note here that it gets hot when running processor-intensive tasks and not your everyday office things.
As this is a Huawei device, it will communicate with your other compatible Huawei devices like smartphones, monitors and more with a feature called super device.
So at £1699.99, it's priced at around the same price as its competitors from LG, Dell and even Apple, although I don't think this will match Apple's M2 chip processing and efficiency performance. It looks sleek with excellent performance but the battery is lacking so what could really hold the MateBook X Pro back is the battery and maybe the lack of an OLED display. If the name is no issue for you, then you should definitely consider this pocket or backpack rocket.
