At times, an ominous cloud band forms on the forward or leading edge of a thunderstorm. It is part of the thunderstorm gust front, called a shelf cloud, because it hangs out in front of the storm like a shelf. The technical name for that is arcus. It may be smooth on the forward edge, and dark and turbulent beneath. You may see little fragments of clouds forming and rising straight up on the edge of the shelf cloud that are sometimes confused for funnel clouds, but those clouds don’t rotate. They are moisture condensing as air rises. Because shelf clouds can be very wide, some people take a picture using a panorama mode. That distorts the proportions of the shelf cloud, to make it appear more extreme.
