Why India solar capacity slowed down. Why India wants to add 100 GW of capacity by 2022. But according to a new report by global analytics firm CRISIL, it will only manage 60 GW by 2022. Anti-Dumping duty on imported solar panels widely used in India seems to have increased the cost.
On top of that the lack of clarity on goods and services tax (GST) in 2018, also seems to have slowed setting up of new plants. In 2017-18, 9000 MW of solar capacity was added, which slowed down to less than 7000 MW in 2018-2019.
Last year India imposed a 25% safeguard duty on imported solar panels which are mainly imported from China and Malaysia. This was done to safeguard India's domestic solar panel manufacturers. But it increased the cost of setting up of solar plants by 10-15 per cent. But in the next couple of years as the anti dumping is reduced incrementally, capacity addition is set to pick up.
India's solar capacity crossed 25 GW by December 31, 2018.
