In this drum lesson, we'll learn several funky beats that use a tasty hi-hat lick.
This lesson has two parts. For the first section I’ll demonstrate a tasty groove from Efrain Martinez that sounds a bit like a David Garibaldi beat. For the second part of this video I’ll extract a hi-hat part from his groove that I found interesting and use it to create and embellish several other grooves.
As I see it it there are two tricky aspects to learning Efrain’s groove - the first is the four way coordination this groove requires. Whenever I attempt a groove that ties me into knots for awhile, I know I’m on the right track and that the pattern is challenging enough that it will help me gain some new skills.
But I think the second aspect of learning this groove is actually harder than getting the coordination down. If you had trouble finding the downbeats of the bars, I’m not surprised since that’s what was throwing me, and that was the thing that made this hard to learn. What I found most challenging was “hearing” the pattern and getting a sense of where the counts fall. I’m used to playing grooves with backbeats and the bass drum usually landing on count 1 and this groove has neither things.
One of the values of working on grooves like this is that since they aren’t formulaic they really challenge your ability to learn them. If you do this regularly, it’ll help you pick up new patterns quickly.
The second part of this lesson extracts part of Efrain's hi-hat pattern which we'll use to create some new beats. Whenever you learn a new groove or fill, try to find as many ways that you can to transform it, revise it, and incorporate it into your playing. It will help you come with original uses and applications of ideas you encounter.
For more inspiring grooves that will certainly challenge you check Efrain’s new book RAIZ.
