My last destination on my way to the Bay Area was Dunsmuir. I achieved an eccentric’s dream by staying at the Railroad Park Resort, a collection of train carriages as dining cars, cabooses as rooms, a steam engine and other railroad bits and pieces. I’d stopped by before and this time I made it my destination for the night. I checked out the cabooses on offer and chose number 28 at the end of a row with the rushing river nearby. I felt as happy as a six year old that receives a toy train set for Christmas.
After a look around I hopped in the car again and drove the mile and a half to historic downtown Dunsmuir. I needed to stretch my legs a bit and I was curious to see a bit about this little hamlet along the mountainous Northern California section of I-5. The weather was spring fair and fresh, the architecture interesting as was the bit of history I picked up. The town was established as an engine pusher station, where additional locomotives were added to trains to get them over the Siskiyou mountains between Oregon and California. Some pics here of Dunsmuir and the train hotel. Loved it and recommended. Folks were very nice and the restaurant served high quality fine dining meals.
