Serbia gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in the late 19th century and soon began expanding its territory. During the Balkan Wars, Serbia moved south and gained control over large parts of Macedonia, significantly increasing its size. Shortly after, World War I broke out. Serbia joined the Entente and, despite being occupied during the war, ended up on the winning side. After the conflict, Serbia pursued the idea of uniting South Slavs, leading to the creation of Yugoslavia together with the Slovenes and Croats.
In World War II, Yugoslavia was invaded and dismantled by the Axis powers. The country was divided, and Croatia was established as a puppet state. During this period, large numbers of Serbs were killed or expelled, deepening ethnic tensions. After the war, Yugoslavia was re-established as a socialist federation and even gained additional territory. It was led by Josip Broz Tito, under whom the country remained stable for decades.
Following Tito’s death, Yugoslavia began to weaken, and rising nationalism eventually led to its collapse. Several republics declared independence, resulting in wars and foreign intervention. Serbia emerged from this period with a much smaller territory, while many Serbs found themselves living outside Serbia’s borders. Montenegro later declared independence, and Kosovo followed in 2008, a move Serbia does not recognize and which remains disputed internationally.
