Bishop Richard Poore came from the Tarrant area. Some sources claim he was buried here at St Mary's, other sources claim he was buried at All Saints church Tarrant Keynston; my interest in knowing which church he was actually buried at is sufficiently high enough to try and find out if I can.
It's Bishop Richard Poore that is behind the legend of the siting of Salisbury Cathedral. Relationships between the Clergy and Military at Old Sarum had deteriorated to the point that Richard (Bishop of the Cathedral at the time.), having become thoroughly disillusioned with the military, decided to move his seat of influence by building a new cathedral. The legend goes that he shot an arrow from his bow, pledging to build the new cathedral wherever it fell. Unbeknown to him, the arrow lodged itself in the side of a deer which proceeded to run through the countryside, before falling dead on the site where Salisbury Cathedral now stands.
At Tarrant Crawford there used to be an Anchoress Cell that Richard Poore founded; Arthur Mee in his book on Dorset in the 'King's England' series & F.S.Hinchy in his book 'North-East Dorset Towns and Downs' cite Bishop Richard as the author behind the early 13th Century document 'Anchren Riwle'; a manual for female anchoresses.
