I finally purchased the new Panasonic Lumix FZ200 bridge camera following weeks of stock shortages at most dealers. In the time leading up to delivery I read many reports about the quality of the astounding 25-600mm constant f2.8 zoom lens and peoples first impressions. I was somewhat cautious as to my expectations as several reviewers had complained that the lens wasn't that sharp across the range and really the upgrade from the FZ150 wasn't worth it. All I can say to these reviewers is learn how to use a camera properly before writing such trash. This lens is pin sharp edge to edge at f2.8 and f8 and all all zoom positions! It appears to have the usual sweet spot about 2 stops down but you really have to do a 100% crop to see any difference. These test images were shot over 2 days in sunshine, cloud and night time. Some deliberately against the light to test the nano surface coating ability to hold off flair and ghosting. All the day time shots were taken at iso 100 to iso 400 and all hand held. The night shots were between ISO 100 and 800 and mainly tripod mounted. I shot both wide angle (25mm) and full zoom (600mm) as well as macro close ups botha at f2.8 anf F8.
The lens shows good contrast and little ghosting even on bright highlights. All the images here have my usual Panasonic settings of -2 noise reduction and +1 sharpening and use the standard photo style for the jpeg output and underexposed by 1/3 stop in aperture priority mode.
Please comment on the image quality. On the dull, overcast day there was no blue in the sky just gray - hence the lack of any sky detail!
