👉🏼In this episode of Sachu Kau, Goonj Thakkar outlines strategies for reducing or avoiding capital gains tax on equity-oriented mutual funds (those with 65% or more exposure to equity).Capital Gains Tax Overview (Equity-Oriented Mutual Funds)
👉🏼Long Term Capital Gains Tax (LTCG): Applicable when mutual funds are sold after one year. Tax is levied on gains exceeding Rs. 1,25,000/-.
👉🏼Short Term Capital Gains Tax (STCG): Applicable when mutual funds are sold within one year.
3 Ways to Avoid Paying Capital Gains Tax
👉🏼Tax Loss Harvesting (Applicable for STCG and LTCG):
Mechanism: Using capital losses to "set off" against capital gains, thereby reducing the taxable gain amount.
👉🏼Rules: Short-Term Capital Loss (STCL) can be set off against both Short-Term and Long-Term Capital Gains. Long-Term Capital Loss (LTCL) can only be set off against Long-Term Capital Gains.
👉🏼Carry Forward: Losses can be carried forward for up to 8 years if tax returns are filed on time.
👉🏼Loan against Mutual Funds (Applicable for STCG and LTCG):
👉🏼Mechanism: Instead of selling the mutual funds (which would trigger a tax event), take an overdraft facility loan against the mutual fund units.
👉🏼Details: Loans are typically approved for 30% to 80% of the fund's value. The borrower only pays interest and can withdraw or prepay the loan anytime, while the underlying investment continues to grow.
👉🏼Selling at the Right Time (Applicable for LTCG):
👉🏼Mechanism: Smartly selling mutual funds just before the Long Term Gains cross the exempted threshold (Rs. 1.25 Lakh is mentioned in the document) and then buying them back again.
👉🏼Risk: This involves "Too Many Calculations" and must factor in brokerage, commission, and stamp duty on mutual funds.
