Kottayam is a major city in the state of Kerala, India, serving as the administrative headquarters of Kottayam district. It lies in the south-central region of Kerala and is known for its educational institutions, publishing houses, and strong literacy achievements. The city has played a key role in the state’s media and literature history, being home to several leading newspapers and printing centers.
Geographically, Kottayam is positioned between the Western Ghats on the east and the Vembanad Lake on the west. This location gives the region a mix of midland terrain and low-lying areas. The city experiences a tropical monsoon climate with a warm, humid atmosphere for most of the year and significant rainfall during the southwest and northeast monsoons.
Kottayam has a well-developed urban core with important commercial streets, residential zones, and institutional areas. Major road networks, including links to NH 183, connect the city to nearby districts such as Alappuzha, Ernakulam, and Pathanamthitta. Public transportation, including private and KSRTC buses, supports daily movement within the urban and suburban parts of the district.
The city is noted for its academic institutions, including several colleges, research centers, and schools that contribute to its reputation as a hub of learning. It also has a long tradition in printing and publishing, earning it the title "City of Letters." Cultural, literary, and social activities form an important part of the city’s identity.
Kottayam serves as a gateway to popular destinations such as Kumarakom, Ilaveezhapoonchira, Wagamon, and the eastern high ranges. Its role as a commercial, educational, and transportation center makes it one of the key urban locations in central Kerala.
Kottayam experiences a tropical monsoon climate. Temperatures generally range between 22°C and 32°C throughout the year. The city receives heavy rainfall during the southwest monsoon (June–September) and a secondary spell during the northeast monsoon (October–November). Summers remain warm and humid, while December to February is comparatively cooler.
