Is The Cut Line the ultimate outback shortcut, or just an excuse for a brilliant two-day adventure? We’re taking this Iconic Outback route from Tibooburra to Bourke (via Wanaaring) to see exactly what it’s like to drive this remote stretch of New South Wales.
Before we even air down for the main track, we spend some time exploring the rich history and scenery right around Tibooburra. We check out the setup at the Dead Horse Gully campground, step back in time at the Golden Gully mining site, and catch the views from Sunset Hill. Then, we point the rig north toward the Queensland border to tackle the scenic Gorge Loop Road before finally starting our journey east along The Cut Line.
Track Distances & Warnings: If you are planning this trip, doing The Cut Line without the Gorge Loop is around 425kms. If you decide to explore the Gorge Loop road, it adds on an additional 40kms or so. Keep in mind that both the Gorge Loop and the 230km stretch from Tibooburra to Wanaaring are entirely unsealed and can close for long periods after rain and flooding. Always make sure to check the Live Traffic app for updates before you head out!
After a solid day on the dirt, we pull up for the night at the Wanaaring freecamp right on the banks of the Paroo River. Waking up to a brilliant, clear outback sky and incredible birdsong is exactly why we do this.
Day two kicks off with a mandatory second coffee from the Wanaaring General Store before we start the push to Bourke. Thanks to some recent rain, we were treated to an unbelievable sight: ephemeral lakes holding water, creating an amazing contrast against the deep red outback dirt.
Track Update: Large sections of the road from Wanaaring to Bourke are now completely sealed, and we believe plans are underway to finish the project. By the time you tackle this trek, the road from Wanaaring to Bourke may be fully sealed!
