A change to my usual type of farming based videos filming the sights and sounds of a very enjoyable afternoon spent at the annual Dalston show, just a few miles west of Carlisle.
Starting with the animal pens there was certainly some prime livestock on display, many led by young handlers and farmers of the future with some beautiful cattle and sheep being presented on the day. It must have been very difficult for the judges to pick out the best of show as in my eyes all deserved a rosette!
There were also a large gathering of horses and ponies in the display fields, the many catogories including some beautiful shire horses, show jumping and ladies dressed in period costumes!
After a wander round the craft tents it was time to listen to some music played by the Border Concert Band with a wide repertoire from marches, classics through to rock and pop music who played all afternoon and were very enjoyable to listen too.
Some beautiful vintage and classic cars, lorries, motorcycles and of course tractors were on display. Amongst the cars ranks were a Ford Cortina 1200 Mk 1, a Ford Consul MkII convertible, Capri 280 Brooklands, Austin/ Morris Mini several Triumphs including a TR6, TR8 (yes a V-8) and a Stag, Wolseley police car, 1940s/50s MG, Land Rovers, several trucks and a pair of BSA motorbikes.
The tractor section was a fabulous turnout with machines from all eras and in a rainbow of colours. From 1930s Ferguson-Brown and several 1940s/ 50s TE20 models and also David Brown Cropmasters, the 1960s/70s represented by Fords/ Fordsons, Internationals, David Browns and of course several Massey Ferguson 100 series (including a lovely MF 185 in original condition that had been on the same farm all it’s life!)
There was also a green selection of both beautifully restored and original 1980s and early 1990s machines including a lovely Case 1294, Case-IH 956XL, Ford 4630 with a TB turbo and lift off cab, a pair of John Deeres, a lovely Marshall 802 and a very rare and absolutely pristine Marshall 100 2wd (one of only 9 ever manufactured) that the owner kindly let me have a sit in!
In part two of the video which will be the tractor and vintage vehicle parade I will try and list all the models that took part on the day.
A fantastic show and a great advertisement for the very best in Cumbrian agriculture, I’ll look forward to visiting Dalston show again next year.
Filmed in Cumbria Saturday 9th August 2025.
