STORYLINE:
A necklace of 68 rare natural pearls that were once part of the treasury of an Indian maharaja sold for over seven (m) million US dollars at Christie's New York auction house on Wednesday.
The sale represents the highest price ever paid for a natural pearl necklace, the bid more than doubling the previous record.
The necklace was assembled for the Maharaja of Baroda in India in the 1850s and had seven strands of pearls until it was broken up sometime after 1948.
Sixty-eight of the largest and most luminous pearls fastened with a Cartier clasp, were made into the two-strand necklace that sold on Wednesday.
The pearls are as big as marbles, with a luminous pink glow.
The lot also included a pair of natural pearl and diamond ear pendants, a pearl-and-diamond brooch and a platinum ring with a button pearl flanked by diamonds.
The buyer was an anonymous phone bidder, and Christie's didn't identify the seller. The price included the auction house's commission.
The maharajas of Baroda reigned in what is now the state of Gujarat in India.
Another highlight of the afternoon sale was an antique Kashmir cushion-cut sapphire, which after lengthy bidding, finally sold for 3,064,000 US dollars.
The sapphire was 22.66 carats.
The third top lot was a cushion-cut fancy grayish blue diamond, which went for over 2 (m) million US dollars.
Altogether, Christies auction of ''Magnificent Jewels'' brought in over 39 (m) million US dollars.
