We’re celebrating Keep Britain Tidy‘s #LoveParks week this year with a video series, showcasing some of the city’s most popular parks.
Today we take a visit to Leazes Park…
A green oasis amongst the hustle and bustle of city life, Leazes Park is situated against the backdrop of NUFC‘s St. James Park. With a rich heritage, steeped in social history, you can still find its original Victorian bandstand, boating lake and terrace.
Following the winding paths, you can find a variety of birds and wildlife who make Leazes their home, a children’s play area, picnic area, community BBQ facility, café, newly refurbished LTA & WeDoTennis courts, basketball courts and repurposed bowling pavilion which now hosts the wonderful Springbank Pavilion arts and wellbeing programme with Newcastle Hospitals Charity , Curious Arts, Gem Arts and Chilli Studios.
Life began for the ‘people’s park’ in the 1850s, when a group of working men from the factories of Newcastle upon Tyne petitioned for access to some open space so they, along with the people of the Newcastle, could enjoy fresh air, exercise, and recreation away from the heavy industry of the city centre.
Last year the city centre park celebrated its 150th birthday which saw a community fundraiser, kickstarted by Northern Lights Newcastle , raising £21k, to help us restore the much-loved play area as a birthday present to the park.
