Helping a PDA child develop a healthy self-concept is a crucial part of any parents’ journey and it is not an easy one.
Many PDA children have been given a multitude of labels, diagnoses, and words to describe them: Defiant, Weird, Oppositional, Violent, etc. and this impacts their view of themselves in a negative way.
Additionally, even if parents, teachers, peers aren’t giving them negative labels, PDA children often give them to themselves. “I hate myself,” “why am I like this,” “I am a bad kid.”
I remember the day my son randomly asked me why God made him PDA and if it was on purpose and it shattered my heart. 💔
(I said a resounding OF COURSE you are exactly as you are meant to be).
As parents, we have to witness who our children are, but also actively support replacing negative words and concepts with more positive, affirming, belonging-based ones. And because your child is PDA, this process needs to be imbued with... you guessed it... AUTONOMY and a sense of collaboration (equality).
The fourth module in the Paradigm Shift Program is specifically focused on building on nervous system accommodations to support your child in choosing their identity - which they may choose to be PDA, Autistic, ADHD, neurodivergent, just them, or none of the above 😉. Our children are out of the box thinkers after all.
I encourage parents to separate the following:
👉previous diagnoses
👉the threat response
👉the identity
