Lewes Bonfire Night, the UK’s largest and most historic Bonfire Night celebration. This event dates back over 400 years, originally held to mark the failure of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, where Guy Fawkes and others attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Over time, Lewes’ Bonfire Night has evolved to honor not only this event but also the memory of 17 Protestant martyrs who were burned at the stake in Lewes during the Marian Persecutions.
