In 1960, those deemed as 'status Indians' gained the right to vote in Canada.
Previously, they could only become enfranchised and allowed to vote by giving up their Indian status.
But 61 years after the Elections Act was changed to allow First Nations people to participate in federal elections, some First Nations people living in the Kenora riding are speaking out about barriers that prevented them from voting in the 2021 federal election.
