Lisa Williams is the Director of the Edinburgh Caribbean Association. She is also an Honorary Fellow in the Department of History, Classics and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh.
For the last five years, Lisa has taken hundreds of people around Edinburgh on tours to uncover the city’s often hidden connections to the transatlantic slave trade and colonialism. She also undertakes school visits and community outreach to teach the city’s youngest citizens and future leaders about Scotland’s history.
This event begins with a roundtable discussion followed by a plenary address by Lisa Williams. Each participant discusses the various challenges, obstacles and rewards involved with being a Black scholar doing archival research in academic institutions and for public dissemination. The event is hosted by Dr Désha Osborne of Hunter College, City University of New York, and is kindly supported by the Susan Manning Workshop Fund from the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh.
Speakers:
Nadine Chambers, PhD student, Birkbeck, University of London
Katucha Bento, Associate Director of Race.ED, Lecturer in Race and Decolonial Studies, Department of Sociology, School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh
Shantel George, Lecturer in History, member of The Beniba Centre for Slavery Studies at the University of Glasgow
