I dont know who he was or what he was really like, but I do know that Michael Jacksons music haunted me from the first moment I heard it. The very first pop song I ever remember hearing was Thriller. It scared me to death, but I wanted to hear it again and again anyway.
He is gone. There will never be another like him. But his music remains. To say goodbye, I listened to his arrangement of Billie Jean and sang every instrument from the percussion to the lead vocals, putting an octave effect on the voices like the bass and bass drum that were too deep for me to sing. Michael was an absolutely amazing arranger, and doing this farewell made me even more aware of our loss. Its only an echo of him, but as a singer, using my voice was the most personal way I could honor his music.
He once said that he surrounded himself with art because he enjoyed what people created with their hands, so I sketched some portraits of him.
