This is a short documentary about Tom Koska who runs the last typewriter shop in Melbourne, Australia. Tom arrived in Melbourne in the 1960s, a refugee fleeing from the Soviet Union. He arrived not knowing how to speak English.
Thankfully he found work repairing typewriters in Elgin Street where he still faithfully works to this day. Typewriter shops used to be as common place as computer shops - now, there is only one shop - owned and run by Mr Koska.
He recently found international popularity when the famous American actor and producer Tom Hanks started writing to him. Hanks is an avid typewriter collector and loves to visit typewriter shops. We hope he can visit Tom's shop one day soon.
This doco is a homage to the typewriter and the technicians who kept them alive. It was a tool which was common in most offices and households for over a 100 hundred years. This is living history.
The cinematographer is Con Filiipidis (Five C's production); without his help this documentary could not have been made. https://www.fivecs.com.au/
I conceived the idea of this documentary after attending the Melbourne Summer Film School run by Sharon Peers.

Special thanks to Sean Meltzer who edited and stitched the individual clips to perfection. Peter Cave blended the colors beautifully and Adan Cantu helped to improve audio so we could hear Tom Koska clearer.
My name is Chiam Yau ming I directed and produced this documentary. I found Tom through the internet and found him a nice guy after I had sent him a bunch of typewriters I had collected to be repaired. I wanted fully functional, working machines not glorified doorstops.
I'm a writer, photographer, historian, trader and scuba diver. I have an interest in good stories and good people.
