Meet the Li i8: China’s Answer to BMW? — Li Auto has officially revealed its first all-electric SUV – the Li Auto i8. With a name that echoes BMW’s iconic plug-in hybrid sports car, the i8, many are asking: is this a bold branding move or just a coincidence?

The Li Auto i8 marks a major milestone for the Chinese EV giant, transitioning from plug-in hybrids like the Li L8, L9, and L6 to a full battery electric vehicle (BEV). Designed with a minimalist yet futuristic interior, the Li i8 features dual 15.7-inch screens, a D-shaped steering wheel, and no traditional instrument cluster. Instead, it uses a head-up display (HUD) for a cleaner, high-tech driving experience.

Based on a cutting-edge 800V platform similar to the one in the Li Mega, the Li Auto i8 is expected to deliver strong performance with a dual-motor AWD system producing up to 536 horsepower. The Li i8’s advanced battery technology supports 5C fast charging, making it possible to charge from 0 to 80% in under 15 minutes under optimal conditions.

While some elements of the Li i8 design recall existing Li Auto models, spy shots reveal it blends the shape of the Li L8 with the aerodynamic features of the Mega. Measuring over 5 meters long with a 3,005 mm wheelbase, the Li Auto i8 promises generous cabin space, available in a 6-seat (2+2+2) layout.

Despite the shared name with BMW i8, it seems Li Auto isn’t concerned about confusion. After all, BMW has discontinued its i8 model and the name isn't actively trademarked in the EV SUV space. Could this open the door for Li Auto to dominate a name that once symbolized innovation?

Set to launch in China in July 2025, the Li i8 will be priced from around 400,000 yuan (~$54,400), competing with top-tier models like the Tesla Model Y, NIO EC6, and Xpeng G9.
