"Math: being curious without fear - If you know it, it makes you understand how the world works"
With Vincenzo Barone, Theoretical Physicist, University of Eastern Piedmont and Turin INFN
and Andrea Chincarini, Experimental Physicist, member of the VIRGO-EGO European cooperation group, Genoa INFN.
Chaired by Piero Bianucci, journalist and writer
English translation of GiovedìScienza's conference, February 2016
The discovery was made possible thanks to LIGO (900 scientists, two interferometric antennas and half a billion dollars in investments) and to the participation of European VIRGO (prevalently and Italo-French venture). The article appeared in the 'Physical Review Letters', the journal of US physicists. The signal was observed on September the 14th 2015 at 10.50. 45 Italian time and corresponds to the two black holes merging or coalescing reaching the incredible speed of 150 thousand kilometres a second, half the speed of light as they spun around their common baricentre. The LIGO antennas recorded the passage of the gravitational wave in a time window of 10 thousands of a second.
The binary black hole was about a billion and a half light years from us (410 megaparsec). We are now awaiting more comprehensive and documented data which VIRGO will contribute to. This may be the beginning of a new astronomy which will be looking up at the skies through the ‘gravitational window’.
