The Battle of Plassey (23rd June 1757) stands as a turning point in Indian history. Fought between the forces of Siraj-ud-Daulah, the Nawab of Bengal, and the British East India Company led by Robert Clive, this seemingly small conflict changed the destiny of India.
Though the Nawab had a much larger army, betrayal from within became his downfall. Key figures like Mir Jafar, along with powerful bankers such as Jagat Seth, conspired with the British. When the battle began on the banks of the Bhagirathi River near Plassey, many of Siraj’s generals held back their troops, leaving the Nawab almost defenseless.
The defeat of Siraj-ud-Daulah paved the way for the East India Company’s dominance in Bengal, which soon expanded across India. This marked the beginning of nearly 200 years of British colonial rule. The Battle of Plassey reminds us how internal betrayal can sometimes be more destructive than external enemies.
It was not just a battle—it was the first major step towards the loss of India’s sovereignty, and a lesson in how unity is the strongest weapon against foreign domination.
